Studied the classics at the Academic Gymnasium, in 1956 graduated from the Faculty of Dramatic Art and Scriptwriting at the Film Academy of Performing Arts. Worked for two years with State Film as script editor, since 1959 a freelance lyricist. Has authored around 2,500 song lyrics registered with the Czech Copyright Society. Has written lyrics for ten musicals (When it’s Sunday in Rome, Irma La Douce, Alleluia, Good People). For six years taught lyric writing at Jezek Conservatory. Holds two gold, one silver and two bronze Bratislava Lyre awards. His profile album came out in 1996, a recording of concerts by top interpreters, dedicated to his work. Brought to audiences’ attention with the Czech translation of the musical Les Misérables. Co-author of the stage play and author of the libretto for the hit musicals Dracula and Monte Cristo.
Sadly, Zdeněk Borovec only lived to see the sixty-first rerun of the musical Monte Cristo as he died on 18 February 2001.
